Book Description

HELP! My Medicines Are Not Working: Understanding Why and Making Them Work for You is a patient-education guide by Nigerian pharmacist Pharm. Uzo Umeononihu.

It addresses a common and costly problem: people take prescribed medicines faithfully yet see no improvement, then conclude the medicines are faulty. Drawing on her experience in hospital, community, and outreach pharmacy practice, the author argues that treatment failure is rarely random and is often preventable.

The book is organized in four sections. Section A explains what medicines are, the forms they take (oral, topical, injectable, inhaled), and why expectations must be realistic, since healing is typically a process rather than an event and medicines cannot replace healthy living. Section B classifies treatment failure into three categories: medicine-related causes (fake, substandard, expired, or poorly stored products), healthcare system-related causes (overworked staff, dispensing errors), and patient or caregiver-related causes. The author estimates that the large majority of failures she has seen fall in this last category, and she examines it in detail: unsafe sources of medicines and prescriptions, self-medication, incorrect dose, timing, and method of use, early discontinuation, drug resistance, improper home storage, drug-food, drug-herb, and drug-alcohol interactions, and missed follow-up visits. Section C offers a practical remedy, the FILDSS framework: Follow-up, Interactions, Lifestyle, Dosage and dosing, Sources, and Storage. Section D concludes with a call for readers to move from passive medicine users to informed participants in their own care, supported by a closing self-check reminder. Throughout, the author uses anonymized patient stories and plain language to teach that understanding, consistency, and professional guidance are central to treatment success. The book is aimed at patients, caregivers, and families, and also at healthcare workers, students, and community health educators.
